Before You Pick Up a Stone: A Message to Young Citizens
Protest Is a Right, but Violence Has Consequences Young people have always played an important role in social and political change. Their energy, courage, and willingness to question authority can draw attention to neglected issues and compel institutions to respond. Peaceful protest, public discussion, voting, journalism, petitions, and civic organising are all legitimate ways of participating in a democracy. However, peaceful dissent must not be confused with violence. Standing on a road, raising slogans, challenging authority, or appearing in a viral video may create a temporary feeling of courage and importance. In an emotionally charged crowd, throwing a stone or damaging property may even feel like an act of rebellion. Yet a few seconds of impulsive behaviour can produce consequences that continue long after the crowd has dispersed.
