Is Gen Z the First Generation to Fall Behind Its Parents?

 

The question of whether Generation Z is falling behind its parents has become increasingly difficult to ignore. Concerns are frequently raised about declining attention spans, weakening reading habits, excessive dependence on technology, reduced patience and the deterioration of respectful public dialogue.

These concerns deserve serious consideration. However, describing an entire generation as less intelligent, less capable or less responsible than the one before it would be both inaccurate and unfair. The available evidence presents a much more complicated picture.

Gen Z has grown up in circumstances that are radically different from those experienced by previous generations. Its members have unprecedented access to information, technology and global communication. At the same time, they face constant digital stimulation, intense social comparison, economic uncertainty, disrupted educational experiences and online systems specifically designed to capture and retain attention.

The important question, therefore, is not simply whether Gen Z is moving backwards. It is whether the social, educational and digital environments surrounding young people are helping them develop their full intellectual and emotional capabilities.

What the Flynn Effect Actually Tells Us

For much of the twentieth century, average scores on many intelligence tests increased across successive generations. This pattern became known as the Flynn Effect, after researcher James R. Flynn.

The phenomenon is sometimes interpreted as proof that every generation became more intelligent than its parents. That interpretation is too broad. The Flynn Effect specifically refers to improvements in performance on certain cognitive tests. It does not establish that later generations were automatically wiser, more ethical, more emotionally mature or better educated in every respect.

Researchers have proposed several possible explanations for the historical rise in scores, including improved nutrition, wider access to education, better public health, smaller families and the increasingly complex cognitive demands of modern life.

More recent studies have found that these gains have slowed, stopped or reversed in certain countries and in some areas of cognitive testing. For example, research using Norwegian data found that both the earlier rise and the later decline in test scores could largely be explained by environmental factors rather than genetic changes. Studies in other populations have also reported declines in some forms of verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, while performance in other areas has remained stable or improved.

This is important evidence, but it does not prove that humanity - or Gen Z as a whole - is becoming less intelligent. Test results may be affected by changes in education, culture, motivation, health, test familiarity and the types of skills that society encourages people to practise.

The most reasonable conclusion is that some traditional cognitive gains may no longer be continuing at the same rate. The reasons remain contested, and the pattern is not universal.

Educational Decline Is a Warning, Not a Verdict

International educational assessments have added to these concerns. In the OECD’s 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment, average mathematics performance across participating OECD countries fell sharply compared with 2018, while reading scores also declined. Some of this deterioration was associated with the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, although reading performance had already been weakening in many education systems before the pandemic.

These results indicate genuine educational challenges. Nevertheless, falling assessment scores should not automatically be treated as proof of declining intelligence. They may also reflect school closures, learning inequality, teacher shortages, changing curricula, reduced reading practice, mental-health pressures and differences in how students engage with formal examinations.

The Indian picture is similarly complex. India continues to face substantial problems in foundational literacy and numeracy, particularly among disadvantaged children. Yet the Annual Status of Education Report 2024 found notable improvements in basic reading and arithmetic among children in rural India compared with 2022, with especially strong gains in government schools and the early grades.

It would therefore be misleading to claim that Indian children are uniformly moving backwards. The data reveal serious gaps, but they also demonstrate that improvement is possible when foundational learning receives sustained attention.

Are Smartphones Responsible?

Smartphones are often treated as the principal cause of declining concentration and learning. This explanation is attractive because it is simple, visible and emotionally persuasive. It is also incomplete.

A smartphone is not inherently harmful. It can provide access to books, lectures, language learning, professional training, public services and communication networks. For many young people, particularly those living outside major cities, digital technology can open educational and economic opportunities that were previously unavailable.

The problem arises when technology is used without limits, purpose or supervision.

Research has found associations between heavy screen use and difficulties involving attention, sleep, learning and emotional well-being. Reviews of the evidence generally suggest that the effects depend on several factors: the child’s age, the amount of screen exposure, the content being consumed, whether several forms of media are being used simultaneously and what important activities are being displaced.

This distinction matters. Reading a carefully written digital book, attending an online lesson and endlessly scrolling through short videos are all classified as “screen time”, but they make very different demands on the mind.

The central issue is not simply the presence of a screen. It is the design of the digital experience and the behaviour surrounding it.

Information Is Not the Same as Knowledge

The digital age has made information extraordinarily easy to obtain. A definition, formula, historical fact or explanation can be retrieved within seconds. Yet immediate access to information should not be confused with understanding.

Knowledge requires more than exposure. It requires attention, interpretation, repetition, memory, comparison and the ability to connect new information with what is already known. Wisdom requires even more: experience, judgement, self-awareness and an understanding of consequences.

When every unanswered question is immediately handed over to a search engine, video platform or artificial-intelligence tool, people may become accustomed to retrieving answers without constructing understanding. This is often described as cognitive offloading - the use of external tools to perform mental tasks that might otherwise involve memory, calculation or reasoning.

Cognitive offloading is not always undesirable. Writing, books, maps and calculators are also forms of external cognitive support. The danger appears when assistance begins to replace thinking rather than extend it.

Neuroscientist and educator Jared Cooney Horvath has been among those warning that poorly designed or excessive classroom technology can weaken attention-rich learning and reduce opportunities for memory, reading, writing, discussion and higher-order reasoning. His broader argument is not that all technology must be rejected, but that educational tools should be judged by whether they improve learning rather than by whether they appear modern.

A generation surrounded by information can still become intellectually fragile when it is rarely expected to concentrate, remember, struggle with difficult material or reconsider its assumptions.

The Responsibility of Parents and Families

Any discussion of young people must also include an honest examination of parenting and family life.

Modern parents often work under intense economic and professional pressure. Many are trying to provide their children with better schools, greater financial security and opportunities that they themselves did not have. These efforts should not be dismissed.

At the same time, material provision cannot fully replace presence, conversation and guidance.

A child may have access to an expensive phone, private tuition and countless entertainment options while still lacking regular conversations with attentive adults. When families eat separately, remain absorbed in individual devices or communicate mainly through instructions and corrections, children lose important opportunities to learn empathy, patience, language and conflict resolution.

Parents are also powerful behavioural models. Children are unlikely to develop balanced digital habits when adults constantly check notifications, interrupt conversations to answer messages or spend family time scrolling through social media.

Digital discipline cannot be imposed only on the young. It must be practised collectively within the household.

This does not require rejecting technology. It requires creating spaces in which technology does not dominate: device-free meals, regular reading, outdoor activity, uninterrupted study periods and conversations in which children can speak without being immediately judged or dismissed.

When Influencers Become the Primary Role Models

Previous generations were also influenced by celebrities, athletes and popular culture. Social media, however, has transformed the intensity and intimacy of that influence.

Online personalities now appear inside the home, often for several hours a day. Their content may shape language, appearance, ambitions, political opinions and ideas about success. Algorithms repeatedly present the material most likely to provoke excitement, outrage, envy or curiosity, because emotionally charged engagement keeps users on the platform.

Many creators use their influence responsibly. They teach, entertain, encourage social awareness and build meaningful communities. The concern is not that young people admire online personalities. It is that popularity may be mistaken for authority and visibility for achievement.

When likes, views and follower counts become the dominant measures of personal worth, qualities such as integrity, patience, reliability and service can appear less rewarding. A carefully developed skill may receive less immediate recognition than a provocative statement or humiliating prank.

Young people therefore need media literacy, not merely restrictions. They must learn to ask who created a piece of content, what the creator wants from the audience, whether the information is supported by evidence and why the platform is recommending it.

Without these habits, users do not simply consume online culture; they are shaped by its commercial incentives.

Public Disagreement and the Decline of Restraint

Another legitimate concern is the growing visibility of abusive language, personal attacks and humiliation in public discussions.

Online platforms often reward speed and aggression rather than reflection. A harsh response can circulate more widely than a balanced argument. Nuance is difficult to express in short posts, while anger is immediate and easily shared. People may also write things from behind a screen that they would hesitate to say in a face-to-face conversation.

This problem should not be attributed exclusively to Gen Z. Political leaders, media organisations, celebrities, influencers and older users all participate in the digital culture that young people observe and imitate.

Disagreement is essential to democracy. Citizens must be free to criticise institutions, challenge authority and question one another’s ideas. But freedom of expression does not require cruelty. A healthy democratic culture depends on the ability to disagree firmly without denying another person’s dignity.

Civility is not weakness or silence. It is the discipline of directing criticism towards ideas, decisions and conduct rather than using abuse as a substitute for argument.

Gen Z Is Not a Single Personality Type

Any judgement about an entire generation should be treated cautiously. Gen Z includes people from different countries, economic classes, languages, cultures and educational backgrounds. A student with stable internet access and extensive family support does not experience technology in the same way as a young person using a shared phone to study while also working to support a household.

This generation includes researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, teachers, athletes, volunteers and activists. Many young people are highly informed about mental health, climate change, discrimination and social responsibility. They are also adapting rapidly to technologies and occupations that did not exist when their parents entered the workforce.

At the same time, they face genuine risks: fragmented attention, exposure to misinformation, online harassment, unrealistic comparisons and pressure to perform publicly from an early age.

Recognising Gen Z’s strengths does not require ignoring these dangers. Similarly, acknowledging the dangers does not justify condemning the generation.

The Better Question

Asking whether Gen Z is worse than its parents may generate debate, but it does not lead naturally to solutions. It encourages one generation to prosecute another instead of examining the systems that influence them both.

A more productive set of questions would be:

Are schools teaching students to think deeply or merely to complete assessments? Are digital platforms being designed around human well-being or maximum engagement? Are families creating enough time for conversation and shared experience? Are adults modelling the restraint and responsibility they demand from young people? Are social institutions rewarding knowledge, character and contribution - or merely visibility, wealth and outrage?

Young people do not design the educational systems into which they are born. They do not create the first devices placed in their hands, establish the business models of social-media platforms or determine the values celebrated by society.

Adults and institutions make many of those decisions.

A Shared Responsibility for the Next Generation

There is not enough evidence to declare Gen Z the first generation to fall behind its parents. There is, however, enough evidence to justify concern about attention, learning, digital dependence and the quality of public dialogue.

The response should not be panic, nostalgia or generational blame. It should be deliberate action.

Schools must protect time for reading, writing, discussion and independent problem-solving. Parents must combine material support with presence, boundaries and example. Technology companies must be held accountable for designs that exploit attention, particularly among children. Young people themselves must learn that convenience is not mastery, popularity is not character and immediate information is not the same as knowledge.

Gen Z is not a finished product that can be judged from a distance. It is a generation still being educated, influenced and shaped.

The future of this generation will depend not only on the choices young people make, but also on the society, education, digital culture and moral example that the rest of us place before them.

Generations do not simply emerge as better or worse than those that came before. They are shaped collectively - and that responsibility belongs to everyone.
